Highlights from ONC’s meeting from October 11th
-This meeting started off by hearing from 3 of the 4 candidates for City Council, Russ Patterson, Kay Hyman, and Joe Collins.
-Parktoberfest took place last weekend on the streets of E. Montague and was a success. We look forward to the event next year.
-Use 911 for all regular and non-emergency calls. The old dispatch line of 745-1015 is NO longer being used.
-NC Creative Arts school is off to a great first year. All of our schools need volunteers, especially on the Elementary level. The most volunteer opportunities are to become a Reading Buddy. If you want to help in any way, please contact the school principal or Trident United Way to tell them how you can help.
– Call to volunteers…we need your help to make our neighborhood better. We have organized 5 “Branches” within our council: School Branch, Beautification Branch, Crime Watch Branch, Community Garden Branch, and Membership Branch
-Our Crime Watch Branch is looking to have another meeting soon once the city of NC finds a new Crime Watch Prevention Officer. If you want to stay involved and be in the know regarding crime in our neighborhood, contact the leader, Paul Ristau.
-The Community Garden Branch is considering adopting the family plot model where a family would rent a section of garden for a low yearly price. There are many opportunities to help Hursey Elementary with their Garden Classroom, call the school to see how you can help and see how the 3rd and 4th graders use this garden as part of their curriculum. Please contact Russ Patterson if you want to get involved.
-The Beautification Branch will be meeting on Wednesday, November 9th at 6:30 pm at The Meeting Place. Join us as we brainstorm on how we would like to focus our energy for the upcoming year. Please contact Kate Besta if you are interested in attending these meetings and helping out.
-The Membership Branch is organizing a packet for our neighbors to be mailed out in the coming months. This packet will allow neighbors to understand who we are as a council and what we hope to do for our neighborhood. It will also give you the opportunity to express your opinions on how you think the council is doing. Be looking out for this in your mailbox and please spread the word. If you would like to volunteer please contact Christine Beddia.
